20 W. 3rd Avenue, Unit 702

Built in 1980, Foster Towers is a bold statement of luxury just steps from downtown San Mateo. This Posh West 3rd Avenue address treats owners to a resort-like experience with 24 hour doorman, pool, tennis court, and absolutely spectacular views. One of the Peninsula's elite trophy buildings, you will find grand room sizes immersed in scenery. This 7th floor unit features a north/south orientation with a soothing panorama. Westerly views encompass the ridgelines above Hillsborough's Tobin Clark lands.

What I love about the north-facing view (unobstructed from the living room) is that it captures the actual epicenter of historic San Mateo/Hillsborough. “El Cerrito” or “little hill” was the original estate of Hillsborough Founding Family of William Davis Merry Howard and his teenage bride Agnes Poett, dating to the 1850’s. This is located where El Camino intersects with Baywood Avenue, De Sabla, and El Cerrito Avenue. The original Howard El Cerrito house is no longer standing, but you can glance above the rooflines of still-thriving St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, which was one of the earliest and most important community gathering points for early San Mateo/Hillsborough. The Church was spearheaded with funding by the Howard Family. Other famous pioneers Harriet Pullman Carolan and Frank Carolan, namesakes to the famous Carolands Chateau at 565 Remillard in Hillsborough, were married at St. Matthew's Episcopal in 1892. Founding Father William Davis Merry Howard is still entombed within the chapel.
